Ghost stories

The lowry, Salford

25th February to 1st March

*** Fantastically Creepy ***

*** Get to the lowry to see what’s going bump in the night ***

Ghost stories is made up of three differently told horror stories, with the whole show lasting 90minutes. We were told at the start that we couldn’t leave the auditorium once the show had started. The time flew by and come the end we were that told again to keep the secrets of what we had just seen! I was hoping to be wowed or surprised, but I left feeling a little under whelmed though many other in the audience were lapping it up.

Dan Tetsell plays Professor Goodman, who is the presenter come narrator of the play. During his lectures to the audience, he tries to explain and debunk each of the stories that he has been told. The three stories each have a different member of the cast telling their story, David Cardy plays Tony Matthews(a security guard), Eddie Loodmer-Elliott is Simon Rifkind (a young partygoer) and Clive Mantle who plays Mike Priddle (a father to be). This all-male cast are great in each of their roles, all holding their own. It surprising seeing an all-male cast these days, especially as some of the role could easily be played by women, this might be a good option for future casting. Some of the ghost and ghouls in the production felt a little A-level, but the actors helped to maintain the story telling from falling off the cliff.

A simple set which was all that was needed, as it was mainly in darkness. We found ourselves seeing things in the dark, as the tension builds. The lighting and sounds bringing us to jumpy moments, that resulted in screams and then titters from the audience members. There were times when the entire auditorium was plunged into complete darkness, and this did feel fantastically creepy.

We did enjoy the way the stories were brought together at the end. This enabled us to understand the story arc and character’s delirium. The play felt like a fun fairs ghost train, there were a few jumps and creepy moments, but it felt like it needed a good lick of paint. The play may have been better suited to a smaller space such as the quays theatre, where the intimacy of the venue would add an extra element. There are many great ghost story telling plays out there, such as 2:22 ghost story. Sadly for us this isn’t one of the greats, though it still might give you a few goosebumps! Get to the lowry to see what’s going bump in the night, playing until Saturday 1stMarch
