***CRUEL INTENTIONS - DRIPPING IN HIGH GLOSS 90’S DRAMA***

***YOU’LL KILL FOR THIS SOUND TRACK! ***

***GLOSSY. SEXY. 90’s NOSTALGIA FUN***

Cruel Intentions (1999), inspired and loosely based on the French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

In this 90’s Juke box musical, the story is more true to its namesakes movie version story line, where we see a bet between a step-siblings. Sebastian Valmont who is played by will Callan is a charmer and loves to seduce women before moving onto the next. He wants a challenge!

His step-sister - Kathryn Merteuil played by Nic Myers lays down a weird gauntlet. He is to seduce and sleep with his headmaster’s daughter - Annette Hargrove (Abbie Budden) if he manages this then Kathryn will sleep with him if she wins then he is to give her his vintage Jaguar.

There’s plenty of great 90’s nostalgia here not only from the movie story line but also the endless hits (24 to be exact) from the decade including Placebo, N*SYNC’s, No Doubt, Spice Girls, Christina Aguilera and ending with The Verve’s ‘Bittersweet Symphony’.

You’ll kill for this soundtrack!

With modern sexual liberation for women some of the themes explored can feel a bit dated, but this is a good reflection on how things have moved on. Another positive reflection is how good a 90’s tune still is.

The Palace theatre lapped up every scene & musical transition. Comments at the interval from everyone in the stalls were riotus. It feels really modern, glossy even - and great that Bill Kenwright productions have spent on the visuals for this touring production.

Our male lead Will Callan we have seen prior in Les Misérables as Marius. His voice is strong and is a real powerhouse when he needs to crank up the volume. The stand out comedy performance from Lucy Carter’s Cecile was welcome.

Gary Lloyd’s choreography has memorable set pieces with Back Street Boys being a particularly memorable moment. The highlight for us came in Act 2 with the track COLOURBLIND. A moody subway romp that just used theatrical energy and drama.
