***HAVE A JOLLY (EASTER) HOLIDAY WITH MARY POPPINS***
MARY POPPINS was that Disney - go-to holiday film that really could turn a miserable wet day into a fantastical adventure. I think it’s fair to say that my VHS of POPPINS was worn out eventually!
The much loved P L Travers tale was eventually released as a movie on 23.12.1964. It’s well documented that Ms. Travers really struggled handing over the story to Walt Disney - & it’s also true that Cameron Mackintosh had many meetings with her to instill confidence that her beloved Mary would be in safe hands after her passing.
Disney magic really is encapsulated in the film so does it work live on stage? The answer is a resounding Yes! 20 years of this musical has charmed audiences worldwide. Zizi Strallen has stepped in time grabbing her carpet bag & iconic parrot brolly with effortless ease in a previous incarnation.
This production sees Aussie Stefanie Jones and she brings us a prim and proper MARY that oozes Disney theatrical magic from every part of her. What a joy this part must be. We met her after the show and had to discuss her beautiful costumes. Her favourite is the iconic blue coat. I was a little star struck…. she took my hand and I said ‘I’m not sure if I shout curtsy or not?!’ Completely natural and at ease - she’s a true star. I asked her if she was tired after such a full performance. Stefanie said it’s like a 2.5 hour cardio session! I’m sure Julis Andrew’s would be mightily impressed with this performance.
Fellow Aussie - Jack Chambers as cockney BERT was perfectly charming. He’s like a jack in the box! Circus skills on top of singing, dancing and acting make him a quadruple threat in manly ways. We saw him in January @aoarena at Big Night Of Musicals & tonight he proved to be the perfect Bert.
MICHAEL BANKS - Charlie Donald spoke clearly and was a cheeky chappy throughout. This role is demanding for a young performer. He bounced off Katie Ryder - JANE BANKS. Convincing as siblings and they are bound to grace other theatrical roles in their careers.
Every performer is on their A-Game in this show. Rehearsals must be intense. All the hard work has paid off. It shows. The list of creatives is a who’s who of theatrical glitterati - Matthew Bourne, Julian Fellows, Disney Musicals. You know EVERYTHING has been thrown into the mix to create a visual feast. Don’t expect a carbon copy of the film. This production really does bring all the feels - but has elements from the original book too.
Looking around the audience (mouths were open like a cod-fish!) several times from both children & adults. Disney theatrical has brought us - LION KING, ALADDIN,Beauty & The Beast, The Little Mermaid (in Europe) & soon to be HERCULES in the west end at Drury Lane.
To me - Poppins is a tale I’ve always held pretty dear to me. It was clear tonight that this story does evoke huge nostalgia. Children dressed up as Mary running to their seats - eager to see this show live. The Sherman Bros who wrote the score will continue to inspire future generations. How great is that?
You are guaranteed to have a fantastic night at the theatre if you book this show. It’s not one that tours often so we really do recommend you catch Mary & Co while they are in town.
